Five ways to build mindfulness practices into your working day

In today’s fast-paced work environment, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by constant emails, meetings, and deadlines. Mindfulness – the practice of being present and fully engaged in the moment – can help reduce stress, improve focus, and enhance overall well-being.

Here are five simple ways to incorporate mindfulness into your working day at Nexus and beyond.

1. Start your day with intention

Before diving into your inbox or task list, take a few moments to set an intention for the day. This could be as simple as focusing on a specific task, fostering collaboration, or maintaining a positive attitude. By identifying your priorities and goals for the day, you can direct your energy and attention more effectively, reducing the tendency to feel overwhelmed or scattered. Writing it down or saying it aloud helps create a mindful foundation for the day ahead.

2. Take purposeful breaks

Just as your body needs periodic rest and relaxation, so does your mind. Rather than scrolling through your phone between tasks, use breaks as an opportunity to reset. Step away from your desk, stretch, or take a short walk outside. Even a few deep breaths can help shift your mindset and refresh your energy levels. These breaks can help alleviate stress and improve your mental clarity and creativity.

3. Walking meditation

When moving from one location to another, instead of checking your phone or mentally rehearsing what you’ll say in your next meeting, focus on the sensations of your body in motion. Observe the feeling of your feet on the ground, the movement of your legs and arms, and the feeling of the air on your skin.

4. Use technology mindfully

With endless notifications and digital distractions, it’s important to set boundaries with technology. Schedule designated times to check emails rather than responding instantly. Consider using focus modes or mindfulness apps to create space for deep work and reflection.

5. End the day with gratitude

Before finishing work, take a moment to reflect on what went well. Whether it’s a successful project, a meaningful conversation, or simply getting through a challenging task, acknowledging these positives can shift your mindset and promote resilience.

Don’t forget we have dedicated quiet reflection and pregnancy/feeding spaces in Nexus, which are available 24/7, year-round. Please speak to reception if you would like access to these facilities.

By integrating these small but powerful mindfulness practices into your working day, you can create a healthier, more balanced approach to work. At Nexus, we encourage innovation and collaboration, and a mindful mindset can help you make the most of these opportunities. Give it a try and notice the difference!
