What is asset tagging – and why it matters
Nexus is currently undertaking a project to asset tag all Nexus-owned equipment to support accounting and lifecycle management. The final stage of this process involves tagging assets located within occupied offices and labs.
Asset tagging involves labelling physical assets—such as laptops, monitors, lab equipment, and furniture—with a unique identifier, typically a barcode, QR code, or RFID label. These tags link to a central asset management system that records key information, including purchase details, serial numbers, maintenance schedules, location, and assigned user or department.
Implementing asset tagging helps:
- Improve tracking and inventory management
Asset tagging provides clear oversight of organisational assets, supporting accurate record keeping across hybrid and multi-site teams. - Plan ahead with lifecycle and maintenance tracking
Monitoring servicing schedules and asset life expectancy improves planning and helps avoid unexpected costs. - Enhanced compliance and auditing
Maintaining accurate asset records supports regulatory compliance and simplifies internal or external audits. - Avoid unnecessary spending
Clear asset visibility prevents duplicate purchases and supports better financial reporting, including depreciation tracking. - Streamline day-to-day operations
Asset tagging integrates with workflows such as onboarding, equipment servicing, and IT support, helping maintain efficiency and accountability.
For growing organisations, effective asset tagging provides greater control over physical resources, supports smarter decision-making, and reduces operational risk.
