Does your organisation need help identifying and launching new Biotech-based opportunities?
The Faculty of Biological Sciences is seeking short business-related projects for Postgraduate Masters students on their new MSc Biotechnology with Business Enterprise course.
This is your opportunity to host a bright, graduate Biotechnologist with business and entrepreneurship skills for around 3 months, between April and July 2025, in one of your business development functions.
Within this project, students are looking to engage with companies in biotech, biomedical engineering, biomedical devices, biopharmaceuticals, agri-tech or similar sectors.
The projects should focus on business development functions, including intellectual property (IP) management, horizon scanning, competitor or market analysis, commercialisation, and similar areas.
Students will remain with your business for 12 weeks, meeting either weekly or bi-weekly as appropriate. Meetings can be conducted remotely online or in person, depending on your preference.
The University will provide funding to support students during their placement. This funding can be used for placement-related expenses, such as attending conferences, meeting company clients, or other relevant activities.
- You must submit a brief job description or project outline for the position, no later than 6 January 2025.
- Interested students will submit their CVs by 17 January.
- Businesses can interview candidates between 27 January and 14 February.
- Only students achieving a minimum Merit performance (≥ 60% in a completed semester 1 module) are eligible, ensuring high-quality candidates.
- Projects will be allocated to students by 17 February, and following this allocation students will prepare a short business proposal to familiarise themselves with your company’s operations.
- Students will begin project work from 28 April.

“We collaborated with two students from the University of Leeds, selected after an interview process, to undertake a market strategy project for our CAST3D product in development as part of their MSc degree. Both students demonstrated professionalism, managing their projects independently while engaging with university academics and external organisations for insights.
The students presented our team with a project plan with milestones and deliverables, and used this to track their progress, keeping us informed of any delays. Their dedication, communication and ability to deliver high-quality work exceeded our expectations, our team was very impressed with their results.
Due to this positive experience, we plan on welcoming another pair of students next year to undertake their Master’s project with us. One of our students secured a role soon afterwards as a market intelligence officer in a medical device research technology organisation and we are proud to have supported him in his career journey.”
Ali Abdi (CEO, Additive-Design Ltd)
