Microneedle Solutions’ Story
Founded by University of Leeds graduates, Microneedle Solutions is developing a pioneering vaccine patch that could transform how medicines are delivered around the world. From its base at Nexus, the healthtech start-up is combining scientific innovation with a mission to tackle health inequalities on a global scale.
Turning an idea into impact
Microneedle Solutions (MNS) was founded by Henry Dunne and Ian Bartenev while they were studying Biotechnology with Enterprise at the University of Leeds. Inspired by challenges exposed during the COVID-19 pandemic, the pair saw an opportunity to address barriers that prevent people from accessing essential healthcare, particularly in underserved communities.
Their solution is a self-administered microneedle patch designed to deliver vaccines without traditional injections. The technology aims to offer a painless alternative to needles while removing some of the logistical challenges associated with vaccine storage, transportation and administration.
Developing breakthrough technology
Since launching the business, the team has focused on solving one of the biggest challenges facing microneedle technology: how to manufacture it reliably and at scale. Working from Nexus, they have developed their own novel manufacturing system, supporting product development, testing and preparation for future clinical studies.
The company’s vision extends beyond technological innovation. By making vaccines easier to transport, easier to administer and more accessible to patients, Microneedle Solutions hopes to improve healthcare outcomes for people regardless of geography, infrastructure or access to medical professionals.
Growing within the Nexus community
Microneedle Solutions has been part of the Nexus community since its early stages. The innovation hub has provided access to facilities, specialist networks and collaboration opportunities that have supported the company’s growth from university concept to an emerging healthtech business.

Looking to the future
Having completed extensive pre-clinical development, Microneedle Solutions is working towards clinical studies and ultimately bringing its vaccine patch technology to market. The ambition is bold: to become the first company to commercialise a vaccine delivered through a dissolvable microneedle patch.
As the business continues to scale, its founders remain focused on combining scientific excellence with social impact, ensuring that innovations developed in Leeds have the potential to improve healthcare access around the world.
